Italian Swiss Colony Chromolithographs

ADV

The Italian Swiss Colony and its wine concern were founded in 1881 by Andrea Sbarboro in Asti, California (Sonoma County). The winery, which sold shares of ownership to its workers, burgeoned into the largest wine producer in California. By 1910, the winery had a capacity of 14,250,000 gallons. An entire community of housing and workspaces was lavishly and creatively built from its success. In the 1950s, ISC was the second-largest tourist attraction in California! They were masters at marketing and merchandising for both the product and the site. This set of four rare 1906 Italian Swiss Colony chromolithographic advertising graphics was distributed to saloons, taverns, and wine and liquor stores as a promotional tool. The artwork was created by artist Ernesto Zampighi and produced by Kaufmann & Strauss in New York City. From the collection of Gail Unzelman, Santa Rosa, CA., wine history author, historian, and collector.
